Arkansas State loses to New Mexico State in series

Down 3-2 in the bottom of the 10th with two outs and nobody on, Arkansas State University loaded the bases with three consecutive singles, received a bases loaded walk to tie the game and Nate Olson streaked across the plate on a wild pitch by Andrew Garretson, as the Indians (19-25, 7-10 Sun Belt Conference) came from behind to defeat New Mexico State (29-17, 6-9 SBC), 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium-Kell Field in Jonesboro.

With two outs in the bottom of the 10th, second baseman Brock Buckingham, Olson and designated hitter Brad Hayes all reached on singles to load the bases.

Garretson walked catcher Ryan Corrigan to bring in Buckingham and tie the game at 3-3. Olson then crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Garretson to give the Indians a 4-3 victory.

Brad Thomas (3-3) gave up one run on four hits in four and one-third innings in relief to pick up his third win of the season. He struck out four and walked two.

Thomas came in in relief of Jody Petty, who gave up just two runs on six hits in five and two-thirds innings to start the game.

Garretson (3-1) took the loss for NMSU, giving up two runs on six hits in three and two-thirds innings. He struck out four and walked three. Buckingham, Hayes and George Sterner all had three hits for the Indians on the day.

Buckingham went two for four with two runs scored, Hayes went two for four, and Sterner went two for five on the day.
Corrigan went just one for five, but drove in two runs on the day, including the game tying run in the 10th.

The Aggies started the scoring on the day, going up 1-0 in the third. With one out, Alex Borgo walked and then scored on a double by Kurt Wilkinson to put the Aggies up 1-0.

The Indians struck back in the fourth, scoring two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Centerfielder Josh Allison walked and moved up on a single by Buckingham to put the first two runners on to begin the inning.

After Neil Chambers fouled out, Hayes grounded into a fielder's choice where Buckingham reached second on an error and Allison advanced to third. Corrigan grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Allison to tie the game at one.


Blake Denischuk singled to drive in Buckingham and give the Tribe a 2-1 lead.

The Aggies scored a run in the sixth to tie the game at 2-2. With two outs, David Licini singled and then scored on a triple by Hal Bisnett to tie the game.

The game remained scoreless until the tenth, when the Aggies scored a run to go up 3-2. The Indians pushed across two two-out runs in the 10th to come from behind and win 4-3.

The two teams combined to leave 28 runners on base, with ASU leaving 16 on and NMSU leaving 12 on.

Three New Mexico State pitchers limited the Indians to two runs on six hits as the Aggies (29-16, 6-8 Sun Belt Conference) defeated the Tribe (18-25, 6-10 SBC), 4-2 Saturday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium-Kell Field in Jonesboro.

With the game tied at 2-2 in the seventh, NMSU pushed a run across to take the lead.

With one out, Corey Harrington walked and promptly stole second. Gabe Veloz singled to drive in Harrington and give the Aggies a 3-2 lead.

NMSU scored an additional run in the ninth, and held on for the 4-2 win.
Jerrod Marcangeli (6-3) came in to relieve Mike Hale in the third because of tightness in Hale's shoulder, and gave up only one run of four hits in five and one-third innings to earn his sixth win of the season. He struck out four and walked two.

Mike Smith came and one-hit the Tribe over the last one and two-thirds innings earn his first save of the season.

Veloz came up big for the Aggies, going two for three with three RBI and a walk.

Jon Dove (2-4) took the loss for the Indians, giving up three runs on five hits in six and two-thirds innings. He walked seven and struck out five.

Ryan Hamilton came in for the last two and one-thirds innings, giving up one run on two hits.

Catcher Ryan Corrigan was the only Indian with more than one hit, going two for three with two runs scored. He also reached base as result of a walk.
The game went scoreless through the first two frames, until NMSU scored twice in the third to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Alex Borgo and Kurt Wilkinson started the inning with back-to-back singles. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Harrington.

Veloz singled to bring in Borgo and give the Aggies a 1-0 lead. After Veloz singled, Ryan Kenning walked. With two outs, Dove walked Beau Blacken with the bases loaded to drive in Wilkinson and give NMSU a 2-0 lead.
ASU came back in the bottom of the third to score a run and cut the Aggies' lead to 2-1.

Hale threw two pitches to Corrigan to start the inning before he left the game with a tight shoulder, and was replaced by Marcangeli.

Marcangeli put Corrigan on first with two more balls, before Corrigan moved to second on a wild pitch.

Centerfielder Lane Stafford walked, before second baseman Brock Buckingham moved both runners up on a groundout.

Left fielder Blake Denischuk grounded out to drive in Corrigan and cut the Aggies' lead to 2-1.

The Indians scored another run in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2. First baseman Eli Lapka started the inning off with a single. Corrigan reached on fielders' choice as Lapka was out at second.

With two outs, Corrigan advanced to second on a wild pitch before Buckingham singled to drive in Corrigan and tied the game at 2-2.

April 25

New Mexico State starting pitcher Jason Williams went the distance and limited Arkansas State to five hits as the Aggies (28-16, 5-8 Sun Belt Conference) defeated the Indians (18-24, 6-9 SBC), 5-2 Friday night at Tomlinson Stadium-Kell Field in Jonesboro.

Williams (5-1) struck out eight ASU batters over the course of the game to earn his fifth win of the season.

The middle of the Aggie lineup faired well against Indian pitching, as Ryan Kenning, Erik Winegarden and Beau Blacken went a combined seven for 13with five runs scored, two RBI and two walks.

No Indian had more than one hit on the night, while two Indians struck out twice.

John Anderson (2-4) gave up four runs on eight hits through seven-plus innings, while striking out six and walking three.

With tonight's loss, Anderson has now lost two straight decisions.
NMSU scored twice in the second to open up the scoring in the game.
Kenning doubled to lead off the second and scored on a double by Winegarden to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead. With one out, David Licinising led to drive in Winegarden and extend NMSU's lead to 2-0.

ASU fired back with one in the bottom half of the second to cut the Aggies' lead to 2-1.

With one out, shortstop George Sterner tripled. Right fielder Justin Glenn grounded out to drive in Sterner and cut NMSU's lead to 2-1.

Both teams put up zeroes across the scoreboard until the eighth inning when the Aggies scored two more. Anderson gave up a single to Winegarden and a double to Blacken to open up the eighth.

With two on and no one out, the Indians called in Brad Thomas who gave up a single to Licini that brought in Winegarden and Blacken to extend NMSU's lead to4-1.

The Aggies added an insurance run in the ninth, while the Indians added a run of their own in the ninth in the form of a solo home run by Dusty Sexton, his sixth of the season, to cut NMSU's lead to 5-2. Williams then got Sterner to ground out to end the game, and the Aggies held on to win, 5-2.

The Indians return to action on Tuesday, hosting the nationally ranked Ole Miss Rebels at 6:30 p.m. at Tomlinson Stadium-Kell Field.
