Tennis team takes weekend matches

Arkansas State University's tennis team breezed by Northwestern State University in a 7-2 win to improve the Lady Indians' record to 3-0.

The first loss was in number one singles, as NWU's Ljudimila Pavlov beat Kendra Meichsner in a tough two set battle, 7-6, 7-6.

However, the Lady Indians won the other singles matches. Melanie Tate defeated Merlin Prezens 6-4, 6-0, while Kylie Kemsley beat Marta Zivanov 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Giuliana Enriquez defeated Christine Dodge 8-4. Betina Crooks blanked Kourtney Kentzel 6-0, 6-0.

The other Lady Indian loss was in doubles action. Kostner and Tate fell to Lukic and Dodge, 4-8.

Meichsner and Kemsley had no trouble defeating Pavlov and Zivanov, 8-2.

Enriquez and Caroline Szafranski beat Prezens and Kentzel 8-1.

ASU head tennis coach Marcia Williams said: "It was disappointing that Kendra lost, but the top of their (NWU) lineup is real good. It was a fun match. We played pretty well. I think we just had more depth than they did."
