Outstanding members of the Arkansas State University Community
were honored at the annual Student Leadership Banquet Tuesday
in the Reng Center Ballroom.
After a brief ceremony during which the 2001-2002 leaders
of the Student Government Association, Union Advisory Board and
Student Activities Board entrusted the 2002-2003 leaders with
the responsibilities of their office, the attendees viewed a
slide-show featuring the past year's activities while Joe Walsh's
"Life's Been Good" played in the background.
UAB President David Huckabee presented awards to the past
year's UAB staff before presenting the Friend of the Union award
to Dr. Rick Stripling, vice chancellor of Student Affairs.
In honor of Stripling, the award, presented to a faculty member
who shows exceptional dedication to students through the UAB,
will be renamed the Dr. Rick Stripling Friend of the Union award.
Keith Vines, next year's UAB president, then took the podium
to recognize the 2002-2003 UAB staff.
After an introduction by Randall Tate, SAB President Natalie
Hunter presented awards to the 2001-2002 SAB staff.
Several events sponsored by the SAB, including homecoming
and Springfest, were highlighted.
Afterward, 2002-2003 President April Rand acknowledged her
staff individually.
Former SGA President Andrea Smalec awarded the outgoing SGA staff
before presenting Jake Hampton and David Taylor with the Senator
of the Year award. Smalec then awarded Emily Jones the Staff
Member of the Year award.
SGA President Sach Oliver came to the podium to recognize
next year's SGA staff and to name the recipient of the Lt. Colonel
Barney Smith Professor of the Year Award winner.
Dr. Robert Smith, associate professor of computer science
and mathematics, was presented with the award.
The final awards of the evening were the SGA-sponsored Dr.
Mary Lynn Williamson and Dr. William R. Stripling awards, which
were presented to Lesley Pruitt and Shelly Lunbeck, respectively.
Stripling addressed the crowd one final time by reassuring
that the students were the university's highest priority.
"To make sure you succeed in life: that's our single
goal," he said.
