P.E. faculty, students honor achievements

The Physical Education Majors Club held its annual awards banquet Wednesday at Ryan's Family Steak House and distributed 17 awards to faculty and students.

Junior Jerry Jones and senior Michael Work gave a review of the state and southern district conventions in Hot Springs and Greensboro, N.C.

Dr. Jack Sugg, retiring assistant professor of physical education, received the Outstanding Faculty Member award.

He thanked his students by saying, "It's you who make us good teachers."

John Hayduk received the J.A. "Ike" Tomlinson Scholarship, presented to him by Tomlinson.

"I'm very proud to see how far we've come," Tomlinson said.

Gladys Hudgins presented junior Corey Throckmorton with the Gladys McPike Hudgins Scholarship.

Hudgins, who taught at ASU from 1954 to 1985, said, "It is a real honor to me to present this award to physical education majors each year."

Dr. Wilbert Gaines, associate professor of physical education, presented the awards for B.S.E. Distinguished Service to Shane Robinson, Leon Cunningham, Mason Moody, Jackie Booker and Janet Pankey.

Gilbert also presented awards to Janet Pankey and Todd Rhoades for B.S.E. Outstanding Female and Outstanding Male Graduate, respectively.

Dr. Paul Finnicum, associate professor of health education, presented Kendra Meichsner, Libby McCurley, Scott Rector and Thomas Shelton with B.S. Distinguished Service awards.

McCurley and Rector were also given B.S. Outstanding Female and Outstanding Male Graduate awards, respectively.

Jerry Jones was awarded the Outstanding PEM Club Member award.
