University accepts Wilson Award nominations

Nominations are being accepted for the R.E. Lee Wilson Award until March 31.

"Students who show any evidence of outstanding service qualify (to be a Wilson Award nominee)," Dr. Al Langlois, chairman of the Wilson Award selection committee, said.

Langlois said students who are active in their departments, colleges and the university and who are involved with social and religious organizations qualify for nomination.

The committee selects the winner based on character and determination. Advisers, other students or faculty can nominate students for the award. Students can also nominate themselves.

"It is not uncommon for students to be nominated more than once," Langlois said.

Langlois, assistant dean of the College of Agriculture and professor of horticulture, said the award has no grade point average requirements, but winners usually have a 3.0 or better gpa.

"It has happened before in unusual circumstances (that a Wilson Award winner would have a gpa of less than 3.0)," Langlois said. "But it is unlikely."

The university gives the Wilson Award annually to a graduating senior who demonstrates qualities of scholarship and service. The award is named for R.E. Lee Wilson, who served on the Board of Trustees from 1917 to 1933.

The Wilson Award is the highest award given at Arkansas State University. Applications for nominations are available from students' advisers or may be picked up in Langlois' office in Room 227 of the College of Agriculture.
